Moving Checklist
You’ve got the apartment you wanted! Now what? Don’t feel overwhelmed by the
prospect of moving. Our handy checklist will get you through!
6 to 8 Weeks Before Moving…
-
Give written notice to your current landlord. (Check your lease for terms of
vacancy.)
-
Create a “Move File” to keep track of estimates, receipts and other important
information.
-
Set budget for moving expenses and start collecting estimates.
-
Begin sorting. Collect boxes. Give or throw away unwanted items.
3 to 6 Weeks Before Moving…
-
Pick up change of address cards from the post office or go to
https://moversguide.usps.com/?referral=USPS
-
Get copies of all legal and financial records you may need.
-
If necessary, start asking your doctors for referrals in your new city. Get new
prescriptions.
-
Make arrangements for transfer of your child’s school records to new school.
-
Start packing items you don’t use often.
-
Plan for long term or short term storage if necessary.
-
Schedule your move with a moving company and/or truck rental.
-
Schedule connection of utilities in your new apartment. Don’t forget to
schedule a shut off of utilities at your current home. Request refunds of any
deposits.
-
Will you need renters insurance? Will there be a change of rate in your current
insurances?
-
Keep packing. Make sure to have more than enough boxes. Too much is better than
not enough.
